Gulliver had always intended to travel and attended his studies with the intent to do just that. When he was done with school he received an offer to work as a ship's surgeon (under his master, Mr. Bates) which he promptly accepted. After his return, three and a half years later, he set up a practice with Mr. Bates, settled in London and got married. When Mr. Bates died, the business began to fail, and Gulliver decided he wanted to go back to sea as a surgeon.
