The major themes of this story center around the peculiarities and idiosyncrasies that are common to various members of the human race. Throughout the story, people exhibit various negative qualities, the worst seen in the Yahoos in the land of the Houyhnyms. Other negative qualities of the people include the smallness of the people of Lilliput and the "airheadedness" of the intellectuals in Laputa.

As for the style, this is written in the form of a travel narrative, a writing style popular in Swift's time. The language seems dated to us, but is in character with the people who are being portrayed in each world.
