Gulliver learned the language and studied their culture. He gained the trust of the Lilliputians by behaving well and earning it. He also promised to help them in times of war, to survey their land for them, to help with various things that needed to be done (building), and to deliver messages. In turn, the Lilliputians treated him with friendliness.
