Gulliver and the emperor attempt to converse even though they cannot yet understand each other's language. Gulliver tries to speak to the emperor and his men in every language he knows, but to no avail. Gulliver however has a keen intellect and quickly learns the fundamentals of the language. Gulliver becomes a novelty in the village. The emperor takes a liking to Gulliver as a novelty. The relationship is short lived as Gulliver urinates on the queen's burning castle and then refuses to be a weapon for the emperor.

In each place he visits, Gulliver must learn the language. In Lilliput, for example, he cannot understand their language until the ruler decides to favor him and appoints several ministers to teach him their language. For example, the people of Blefuscu speak a different language than the people of Lilliput.
