Gulliver is our narrator and protagonist, he is also the only fully developed character in the story. Gulliver comes from a middle-class family in Nottinghamshire, England. Gulliver is both intellectually intelligent as well as a keen observer of human nature. Both these qualities make Gulliver an excellent "explorer". Because he studied medicine, ship captains were eager to have him along on their voyages. Gulliver maintains good rapport with both men of "quality or nobility" as well as lower class men that work the boat. Gulliver's easy going ways come in handy when he encounters bizarre cultures. Gulliver is quick with languages as well as he is quick to understand his own society's shortcomings.
