Groundhog Day

Stage adaptation

Although Stephen Sondheim expressed interest in creating a musical adaption of the film in 2003,[63] he eventually concluded that " ... to make a musical of Groundhog Day would be to gild the lily. It cannot be improved."[64] Nevertheless, Ramis announced in 2009 that Rubin was working on an adaptation.[65] At a 2014 concert in Hyde Park, the Australian comedian and lyricist Tim Minchin performed a song he had written for the show, "Seeing You".[66]

The musical was officially confirmed in April 2015, with a book by Rubin based on his and Ramis's original screenplay,[67] directed by Matthew Warchus,[68] choreography by Peter Darling,[69] design by Rob Howell,[70] and an original score and lyrics by Minchin.[71] The production reunites most of the creative team behind the 2010 musical Matilda.[72] It premiered in 2016 at The Old Vic theatre in London[73][74] as part of Warchus's debut season as artistic director there.[75] Broadway performances began in March 2017.[76]
