How is Beowulf portrayed in Beowulf versus how he is portrayed in Grendel?

I think that in the book Grendel, Beowulf is still a valiant hyper-masculine hero but Grendel comes off as an anti-hero. Although Beowulf looks similar in both versions, Grendel's rebellion and deep ruminations about life certainly make him a more romantic figure in the book than the epic poem.
