Why does Pip say to Joe that he hopes the soldiers do not catch the escaped convicts?

Pip feels guilty about his part in helping the convict and is convinced that he will eventually be found out. He hopes the soldiers don't catch the convicts because he doesn't want to be implicated for helping them.
