What implications does the line, "My sister, having so much to do, was going to church vicariously, that is to say, Joe and I were going" suggest?

The above quote suggests that Pip and Joe were physically attending the church services. Pip' s sister, however, believed that their presence represented her own..... that she attended church through them, thus, her own presence was unnecessary.
