Magwich dies in prison. I think Pip realizes how dearly Magwitch loves him, and that Magwitch's only concern is that Pip be a gentleman. By the end of the book, Pip risks his own life to help Magwitch escape, and mourns sincerely as they wait in prison for the fever to overtake Magwitch. Any misgivings Pip had about Magwitch had disappeared. Pip is unconcerned about Magwitch's money going to the state. Pip has certainly matured since the beginning of the story. Wealth and status are not his reasons for living anymore. Pip has a deeper understanding of life.
