Magwitch starts out as this ominous question mark. Like Pip we assume he is a criminal and hence is no good. Like Pip, by chapter 42, we are a little embarrassed to find that Magwitch is really a sweet guy, just a sweet guy that has done some bad things. So Pip's lesson, and ours, is that people are seldom good or bad but shades in between. Magwitch the criminal turns out to be one of the more sympathetic characters in the book.
