This could be any number of things; in these chapters we see Pip

~ attempting to court Estella with renewed hope

~ feeling immense guilt over his treatment of Joe & Biddy

~ feeling guilty about Herbert's financial state

All of these things have an effect on what Pip will become in the future. They are individual life lessons.
