Great Expectations

In chapter 11 Pip is being attacked by a young gentle man.Pip fails to protest in the first case but he succumbs to the instigation of the young rival and beats him back.Why would you think Pip fails to protest against Estella?

The boy is a rival.... Estella becomes a dream. Pip sees the boy as competition, Estella as a prize.
