Dickens blends history with his story in a few different ways. First, we have Magwitch...... exiled to the penal colony in Australia and banned from ever returning home. Using Victorian England as a backdrop also allows Dickens to weave in the effects of the Industrial Revolution, new technology, and the opportunity for advancement..... a chance for people like Pip and Herbert to better their circumstances, pursue an education, and gain status without benefit of title.
