Orlick works at the forge. Joe hives pip a half days leave to go and thank Miss Havisham's for her generosity. Orlick feels that he should get the same deal. Joe relents and gives it to him. Mrs. Joe overhears this and is angered about the free time being given out. Orlick calls Mrs. Joe a “a foul shrew." Mrs. Joe demands that Joe defend her honour so Joe takes Orlick down in one punch.
