I think Pip felt he owed it to Magwitch. He was Pip's benefactor and Pip needed to show some respect for that. I think Pip was beginning to understand that being a "gentleman" had little to do with money or station. Pip was understanding that being a gentleman means helping his friends, or people that have been kind to him in the past.
