Mrs. Joe is more than twenty years older than Pip which makes it difficult to think of them as siblings. Mrs. Joe assumed responsibility for Pip's upbringing when their mother died and has complained often about how she has to raise him "by hand". Even though that phrase makes it sound like Mrs. Joe is harsh in her treatment of Joe, Pip does seem to have some tenderness in his heart for her. He is dependent on her and Joe and definitely appreciates the food she cooks. Pip seems to have a closer relationship with Joe and appreciates Joe's understanding and compassion. While he squirms under the harsh authoritative control of his sister, he has an almost brotherly relationship with Joe.
