The two nights before the actual story the guys go out looking for something. Do you think they found it on the third night? What were they looking for?

The boys were looking for mischief.... for trouble. When they approached the car at the lake, they believed it was a friend..... soemone they could give a hard time to. Unfortunately, what they found was a stranger, a bad character, someone tougher than they were. Thus, they not only found the trouble they were looking for, they also came to the realization that no matter how "bad" they thought they were.... there is always someone worse.
