Gattaca

Gattaca

In the scene where Anton is coming to the house alongside Irene, Eugene is pulling himself up the stairs. Explain the director's purpose of costume in this scene.

Thanks

Eugene is always impeccably dressed in Gattaca. The movie itself uses a retro-futuristic style from clothing to cars. Andrew Niccol uses style from the America 1930's to the 1960's meshed with minimalist sci fi. I'm not sure costume is that different in this scene. Eugene has to pull himself upstairs so obviously a sturdy belt would be needed. Also, the wardrobe would have to be relatively free of parts coming off or getting caught on the stairs.
