Claudia begins the story wanting complete control. She wants to plan the journey, decide what happens next, and she loves power. At the end of the book, she finds that power over others isn't a necessary thing in life; she also finds that she doesn't need to be different....... she just needs to be herself. Finding the secret of the stone mason's mark frees her of feeling she needs to be "special." She finally realizes that she can do and be anything, that she is special.

Jaime is funny, and he's thrifty. He pretty much stays his humorous, easy-going

self throughout the novel.
