What does Nietzsche mean by “forgetting is necessary for happiness”?

I'm not an expert on Nietzsce but I'm thinking he means the past does not really matter in the larger context of things. Forgetting the past allows people to move forward because the past does not matter in the first place. To let the past affect your present is meaningless.
