Like many other writers, Elizabeth Bishop found her voice and a following after her death in 1979. She was an American poet, a perfectionist, and in all her works total just over 100 pieces (this is very possibly due to her innate perfectionism). Many of her poems are directly related to the physical emotions brought on by grief and longing, possibly due to the fact that her father passed away while she was still an infant, and her mother was permanently institutionalized because of mental instability when she was just five years old.

Many of Bishop's poems celebrate the working class; factory workers, farmers, and fishermen. Surprisingly, she herself was independently wealthy.
