Walton wants a friend because he feels alone and isolated, particularly due to the goal he wishes to attain. His letters allow us to understand his feelings of alienation, and to comprehend that that the alienation he feels is self imposed. Walton wants a friend or confidant who can understand his mission and why he has undertaken it. He wants someone to talk to and share with.
