The creature's first experience with flame educates him as to the nature of fire. Whereas fire creates light, it is also dangerous to touch.

The presence of fire also alludes to the Greek god Prometheus who gave fire and knowledge of it to humans. Afterwards, he was punished for giving away its secrets. Victor's knowledge becomes a punishment for him as well, although the secret of giving life is his alone.
