The birds

The birds are the first characters to appear in the poem "Burnt Norton’’. They act as guides for the people arriving in the garden and tell them the truth about the garden.

The people who arrive in the garden

The people who arrive in the garden also appear in the poem "Burnt Norton’’. They have an idea of the life in the garden and when they realize the truth they are disappointed and want to leave the garden.

The men

Another category of men presented in "Burnt Norton’’ are the men who are as light as paper and can be blown from one place to another by the wind. These men represent those who have no idea what they want to do with their future and those who have no clear idea about what they want to do with their lives.

The men and the woman

The couple appears in the poem "East Coker’’ in the first part of the poem. The narrator describes their union and their marriage as being a primitive one, taking place on a field.

The elders

The elders appear in the poem "East Coker’’. They are described as being useless because they always talk only about their achievements and never about the things that made them humble.
