Hamilton realized that Burr was riding the fence and ultimately ready to abandon the Republicans. Hamilton was justified because when Burr came to the realization that the Republicans intended to drop him from the ticket (Jefferson's second term), he agreed to switch parties in order to run for the governor of New York.
