What was the paradox of the early republic that was embodied by Washington?

Washington was setting precedents rather than following them. One paradox embodied by Washington was his belief that it was the right thing to step down after two terms. Most people didn't agree with his decision and believed his reasons to invalid. None-the-less, Washington followed his own heart and mind.
