The presidential election was going on. Callender, who believed Jefferson had under-paid him, published the story of Jefferson’s affair with his slave Sally Hemings. Jefferson denied any association with Callender. Ellis notes that DNA testing has since proven the truth of Jefferson's affair, though the news did not keep him from taking the Presidency from Adams in 1800.
