The abolition of slavery presented numerous problems. It threatened to break apart the fledgling country, it raised legitimate moral issues, and it caused debate about the Federal governments role, it also spotlighted state's rights. Unfortunately, holding off this debate and pushing it aside would eventually come to a head in something called the Civil War.
