Adams believed that his career had been the mirror image of Jefferson's. He thought that where he had told the truth, Jefferson's legacy had been to tell the people what they wanted to hear. In the end, he changed that summation and cited that if Jefferson had been destined to tell people what they wanted to hear, his own destiny had been to tell them what they needed to know. (Page 220)
