It is my understanding that this quote comes from this book and I am looking for assistance in understanding it in context, please.

My limited knowledge of philosophy: I think he is saying that this planet is a mystery but no real meaning. The Earth is a big rock with no inherent purpose or meaning to the universe. It simply exists and will one day cease to exist.
