Although Pablo is leader of the guerrilleros, we see that Pilar is the strength behind it. We can see the same thing in her relationship with her husband. She is not afraid to criticize him and Pablo certainly understands the importance his wife has. As Pilar says, Pablo once would have sacrificed anything for the Republican cause but has “gone bad” as the war has dragged on and now wavers in his loyalties. It takes Pilar (I like the symbolism behind her name) to see through the feelings of her husband. She understands him better than he understands himself.
