The people Charlie worked with at the bakery seemed to resent the changes in him. They couldn't understand his newfound intelligence, and he couldn't explain the experiment he was a part of. Eventually, the entire group signs a petition for him to be fired.

Alice thinks Charlie has become too full of himself and talks over her. They end their relationship.

Nemur's interest and feelings about Charlie do not change.... to him, Charlie is a variant in an experiment. It is Charlie who realizes this and resents Nemur for treating him as if he isn't human.
