What is the significance/ meaning/ what is it?

Keyes prefaces the novel with a quote from Plato, which in no uncertain terms discourages men from making fun of those less fortunate. Charlie would symbolize what Plato meant in this quote. Only those with a weak character would make fun of those who have physical or mental weaknesses.
