how did charlie get his job at the bakery?

Mr. Donner had been good friends with Charlie's Uncle Herman. Mr. Donner had promised Mr. Donner to look out for Charlie should something happen to him. After Uncle Herman died, Charlie's mother put Charlie in a mental institution. Mr. Donner remembered his promise and arranged to have Charlie released on a work placement program, giving him a job, at the bakery, and finding him a place to live.
