Why does Charlie decide to work to increase human intelligence? In what way is his decision a step forward in his personal development?

Charlie thinks that he can put all of his new knowledge and out it towards the research, also because in a way it as been a problem he has been concerned with his whole life. This is a step forward in his personal development because after he was intelligent all he did was read and use big vocabulary, but now he is actually using his new knowledge towards and experiment.
