Before the operation, Charlie felt that Algernon was a "pretty smart mouse". He was impressed that Algernon's abilities in the maze were superior to his own. After the operation, Charlie felt sympathy for the mouse. He knew that bot he and the mouse were merely experiments and would return to their former selves.
