Why is Gus so determined to help find the Indian village?

In the book when Zits the Indian boy becomes an old man after for a while he had just turned into a 35 yr. old racist FBI officer.

Gus is determined to track down the group of Indians because they were responsible (Indians, not the group they sought) were responsible for the brutal massacre of white women and children..... a memory that Gus cannot escape from.
