Flannery O'Connor's Stories

The life you save may be your own

What are we to think of the younger Lucynell? The counter boy says of her that “she looks like an angel of Gawd.” Is there a possibility that Lucynell is serving as a conduit of grace or do you feel this is ironic?

The boy at the diner is impressed with Lucynell. It is unclear what O'Connor meant by this line. Is Lucynell a Christ-figure? Is she misunderstood? She has a saintly quality about her that proclaims much more than a mentally challenged woman.
