In Flags of our fathers what did "the photograph" bring to america?

After the battle the press gets hold of the photograph of the second flag raising. It is a huge morale booster, and papers all over the country ask for prints. The photo brought some respite to a population that paid so dearly. Unfortunately there is controversy about the sixth man in the group.
