The Khmer Rouge preached about equality and brotherhood among the common man yet targeted religious minorities and other people for "purification of the populace". As many as 300,000 people were killed by the Khmer Rouge. Like other totalitarian states, the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot wanted unquestioned power and control. Power was at the root of their actions. They used threatened people with death and torture should they fail to conform to their narrow ideology.
