It seemed like a caring relationship that she had,

Until the age of five, Lounge Ung lived in Phnom Penh, one of seven children of a high-ranking government official. Lounge Ung was sort of a tom-boy, "She's (mother) tried many times to teach me the proper way for a young lady to walk..." While her beautiful mother worried that Loung was a troublemaker—that "she stomped around like a cow dying of thirst." Although Ma scolds her for being a "troublesome child", it is tempered with a sense of affection. Her beloved father knew Lounge was a clever girl and often doted on her.
