Why was Fight Club created in the first place by Tyler and the Narrator, what was their true intention(s) and meaning for Fight Club? Also, what role was it meant to play within society?

I believe it was a sort of an underground fraternity of men. They met not to simply beat each other up but to feel something real. They had lost their identity in a sea of artificial masculinity from society and media manipulation. The group was meant to help these men find their old primal identity as well as their "feminine" instincts that seem to have been lost or covered up.
