Liesl believes that people pay "a high price for secrecy". Her interactions with Dunstan enable him to unload a bit of his burden. Liesl teaches Dunstan that secrecy makes him appear "grim-mouthed and buttoned-up and hard-eyed and cruel, because [he is] cruel to [himself]".
