Dunstan says, “[Boy] was always the quintessence of something that somebody else had recognized and defined” (113). To what extent is Dunstan’s assessment of Boy free of malice and envy?

Boy Staunton is an image of the jazz age. He becomes the projection of what others define as successful in a man. Boy is rich, loud, and narrow minded. I think Dunstan is being pretty objective. Dunstan has no illusions about himself and certainly sees Boy for what he had become after the war.
