Fear of Flying Background

Fear of Flying Background

Fear of Flying is a 1973 novel by Erica Jong, an eminent novelist and poet who also frequently engaged in satire. She held many controversial views towards sexuality and feminism which became entrenched in her most famous novel, Fear of Flying. This led to it being released to great controversy and debate when it was first published.

The novel deals with the themes of feminism through exploring the sexual escapades that the main character, Isadora Wing, engages in during her trip to Vienna with her husband. The novel is told in a casual and informal tone from the perspective of the main character. Jong's text presented a revolutionary view on sexual desire in women that was largely synonymous with the view of second-wave feminists of the 70s.
