Jeanne was conditioned by Manzanar. Her experience will always remain in her nervous system for when times get difficult or simply to make sense of her world. Mama's words would always be a shot of encouragement to her.

In my eyes, the Manzanar camp will always be with Jeanne. An experience, a memory that will never fade, that will always come when struggle or pain presents itself. And when this memory comes, it brings it's own pain, a pain that Jeanne will forever feel, throughout herself, across her nervous system. For as it states simply in the question, “Manzanar would always live in my nervous system,” And this as I have just said is what I believe is its meaning. As for the following line, “a needle with Mama's voice.” I think is a tone, a quiver or maturity new within Mama’s voice, that reflects how she changed at the camp. “a needle” showing the true agonizing sorrow that she once held, piercing a single hole in her voice, just enough to be heard by her own daughter. The family was scarred, imprinted upon by hardships of Manzanar, and this is what I believe Jeanne meant when she spoke those words.
