Why are the mountains that are visible from Manzanar important to Papa? What does he do during the day to help restore some of his dignity?1

THe mountains remind Papa of Japan. He is allowed to hike and look for wood to carve into furniture. Papa feels a sense of freedom, independence, and dignity.
