What are important issues that effect the cultural group represented in this book?

The Japanese were essentially interned or jailed by the Canadian and American government. Most of those jailed were innocent men, women, and children. The environment of these camps were harsh and unforgiving. Men lost their place as head of the family and they had problems practicing their own culture.
