Jeanne's Papa's actions are better understood after knowing about his life before Pearl Harbor. He is a proud son of a samurai class family, who leaves Hiroshima in the midst of a severe depression. He is lucky in Hawaii, finding a sponsor who kept him from the back-breaking work in the Hawaiian fields.
